A bit of History... Sheltered by the mountain Kozjak in the North, while surrounded by the islands of Dalmatia in the South, Kastela has long served as a natural refuge for man since prehistoric times. The mild climate and fertility of its Mediterranean climate landscape, all served to attract the Croats who first settled in the 7th century. They started building their villages on the slopes of the mountain; but during the period of Turkish invasions some 500 years ago, the people of Kastela managed to flee towards the coast and build fortifications. Small stone villages developed around these fortified castles, and their unique architecture is characteristic of the modern day Kastela. There are 7 villages lined up from the West to the East in the following order: Kastel Stafilic, Kastel Novi, Kastel Stari, Kastel Luksic, Kastel Kambelovac, Kastel Gomilica, and Kastel Sucurac.
